American university professors Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer were the first to coin and use the term emotional intelligence, defining it as the individual's ability to recognise their own emotional state, as well as that of others. The renowned American psychologist and science journalist Daniel Goleman has gone one step further by stating that one's emotional intelligence, rather than intelligence quotient (IQ) is responsible for succes in life. He defined emotional intelligence as the ability to recognise, understand and manage our own emotions, as well as our relationships with other people. Goleman has developed a coherent model of emotional competence, which encompasses personal competence skills (self-awareness, self-management and motivation) and social competence skills (empathy and social skills). As each of them includes more sub-skills, Goleman's model comprises a total of twenty-five competencies. In his bestseller Working with Emotional Intelligence, Goleman adapted his model of emotional intelligence to the workplace. He emphasises that, in order to excel at work, it is necessary to have at least six highly developed emotional competencies. However, these competencies have to be spread across all the five areas of skills. In addition, he set out the guidelines for the implementation of programmes opting to develop and enhance emotional competencies of employees, thus enabling companies to become emotionally intelligent organisations capable of gaining competitive advantage on the market.
