The aim of this qualitative research was to gain a deeper insight into the experiences of people with obsessive-compulsive disorder during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim was to find out about possible changes in participants’ mental health and to find out which features of the pandemic affected them, and in what way. Also, it was examined whether family members behaved differently towards participants’ symptoms during the pandemic. The study involved 14 participants, while 2 people developed OCD during the pandemic. Data were collected through an in-depth semi-structured interview. The results show that a large number of participants experienced exacerbation of obsessive-compulsive disorder, while some experienced worsening of their comorbid difficulties as well. Participants found it difficult to bear uncertainty, fear of their loved ones falling ill and the possibility of transmitting the infection to others. Furthermore, the media aggravated their anxiety, and for some it triggered development of cleaning rituals. They were also stressed by changes in their daily lives, with the disruption of their usual daily structure and less frequent use of distraction. Participants felt lonely and trapped, and work and school related stress increased for some. At the beginning of the pandemic, reduced availability of some therapists was observed and meetings were mostly held via video call, which suited participants to varying degrees. Still, the support of therapists helped them cope with the pandemic. Finally, some participants’ relatives had increased family accommodation during the pandemic.
