Cardiovascular diseases are the world's leading cause of death. Most commonly including heart attacks and stroke. There are 9 000 cases of cardiac arrest per year in the Republic of Croatia, and it is major public health problem. Sudden cardiac arrest is an emergency that, if not treated in time, can cause sudden cardiac death. With quick and effective help, survival is possible. Cardiopulonary resuscitation is a process consisting of multiple actions that increases the chance of survival after sudden cardiac arrest. It has been proven that the quality of life is better for the people in whom CPR is started immediately. Due to the nature of thir job, nurses/ tehnicians spend the majority of their working time with patients and very often they are the ones who recognize cardiac arrest in patients, which is why they start with CPR. Although they carry out CPR procedures alone or as a team members, research has shown that they have average knowledge and insufficient skills, with regard to European guidelines and recommendations for resuscitation. Providing quality education that would increase the knowledge and skills of nurses/tehnicians would contribute reducing nervousness and increasing self - confidence. This would increase the effectiveness of providing procedures to help with sudden cardiac arrest. The aim of this reasearch was to collect data on the knowledge of first, second and third year students on cardiopulomary resuscitation at the Faculty of health studies in Rijeka. For the purpose of dana collection, an anonymous survey questionnaire was used, which contained questions about the importance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in practice, the main goal and accuracy of CPR interventions, and the indications, methods and effectiveness od CPR. Respondents were able to answer the questions with „correct“, „incorrect“ and „ I don't know“. The first hypothesis „There is a difference in the accuracy of answers betwwn students of the first, second and third year of study“ is accepted as seen in the average number of correct answers between years of study. The second hypothesis „Third year students have more knowledge about CPR than first and second year students“is rejected. Thir-year students have highest number of incorrect answers compared to first and second year students. The results obtained by the research show an insufficient level of knowledge of nursing students and that they need to improve their skills and theoretical knowledge of CPR during their studies.
