Contemporary approaches to online classes can present challenges in both learning and teaching when compared to regular classes. Clearly defined teaching targets help organizing activities through which students acquire general and professional competence. Information - communication technology is only a tool for completing activities which lead to acquiring competence. The focus has to be placed on the methodical shaping of the teaching process. The goal of this research is to establish the quality of online classes taught during the summer term of 2019/2020 at the Teacher training college, Čakovec department. Five different hypotheses were set up to research the relation between the online class activities and students acquiring general competence. (1) Related to that, the next hypothesis (2) researches the relation between the activities carried out and usage of Web 2.0 tools. Furthermore, the remaining three hypotheses research the level of acquired general competence (3) and the achieved grade (4) based on the students’ general data. 118 students took part in the research, all of them students at the Teacher training college, Čakovec department. Based on the results of the research, one can conclude that online classes at Teacher training college, Čakovec department has encouraged acquirement and development of students’ general competence. Transfer to online classes happened suddenly which required quick adjustment both from teachers and students. However, the results of the research show that it is possible to maintain high teaching quality in online classes. The goal of this research is to point out the importance of implementing class activities that encourage the development of students’ general competence. Besides, usage of Web 2.0 tools should be encouraged to ensure the improvement of online teaching. Online classes bring forward advantages and disadvantages when compared with regular classes, while the solution of the problem lies in combined classes.
